Did You Know: RICE is Paleo?
Today we did rope climbs. Later today my shoulders will be sore. Sore to the point that simple tasks like washing my face and brushing my teeth will be uncomfortable. My guess is that I have some tendinitis going on in my rotator cuff. As a result, I have brought my ice bag out of retirement. This ice bag was used frequently when I broke and tore two ligaments in my ankle back in 2009. Thanks to the numerous shoulder movement exercises involved during most WODs, I have realized that utilizing an ice bag is almost required on a daily basis.
For any joint injury (or any injury for that matter) the most effective non-drug therapy is RICE. Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. I'm not really resting right now. I'm trying to get my supporting muscles strong enough to alleviate the strain placed on my tendons. I probably have shoulder issues due to my general weakness in my rotator cuff, tight (and possibly over-developed) chest muscles, and poor shoulder flexibility. Here is my daily routine: shoulder mobility before every WOD (even if shoulders are not involved), shoulder mobility after every WOD (only if shoulders were involved...which is pretty much every day), and ice every morning after a workout. I hope that I will be able to increase my shoulder flexibility and strength to the point that I will no longer be sore on a regular basis. Ahhh...the growing pains of a CrossFit Newb!
